Ambassador vs. Envoy vs. Consulate

  • An ambassador 
    • is the highest ranking diplomat that is sent to another sovereign state in order to represent their country. 
      • For example, a diplomat of France in Korea, will represent France, its government and the people of France that reside in Korea.
  • An envoy 
    • is a diplomatic representative and not considered as a representative of the head of the state. health

  • Consulate 
    • Consulates are generally under the command of local embassies.
    • The consulate carries out non-political issues
      • Such as protecting nationals living abroad, promoting friendly trade, supervising domestic aircraft and ships, and administrative tasks for the sending country (e.g. visa issuance). 
      • Also handles overseas elections under the supervision of the National Election Commission.
    • Protects the status and property of civilians engaged in commerce and industry (e.g., trade) and handling civil complaints and disputes in foreign countries
